Going home: Costa Rica

It had been three years since I last had a sip of coffee in Costa Rica or felt the Caribbean sand and water underneath my feet. Three years since I saw my friends and family. It was time to go back home. Two years ago, Costa Rica held its presidential election. In the U.S., news about the army-free Central American country came in batches of negativity. The stories I heard were of a divided Costa Rica, torn apart by politics and religion. Deep inside, I feared to find my country transformed into a different place.

Granada, Nicaragua

It was December 31st, in the late 80's. As the clock struck midnight, my grandmother grabbed a suitcase and ran out to the street; I followed her. We ran to the corner, passing by a cemetery, and then back home. My grandmother told me she did it for good luck; it was supposed to attract trips to the new year. She has traveled to countless places, and was the one who stirred in me that urge to move, to cross at least the street, to explore, observe, smell and feel.

KS Roadtrip: Monument Rocks

We walked around the monument for a few minutes, and then sat down to watch the sunset. The sun descended slowly, through “the needle”, an oval-shaped gap in between the rocks. The colors of the horizon as the sun sets, and the moon begins to shine taking its place, were simply beautiful. We were amazed, we were marveled, even after sunset, when everything got dark, we wanted to stay.

Santa Teresa

It wasn’t easy to get there, but without a doubt, it was a lot harder to leave. We lived in Cartago in 2014, when we first visited Santa Teresa. We took two buses and a ferry, and we would do it again and again. See, this is the place where you actually go to relax. Now that I think about it, that last sentence will probably be repeated in the next posts we will share with you, I guess we relax too much, or not enough.

Enjoying Casa Conde

As part of the prize we won through Expo Novia, Will and I had the opportunity to stay at the Casa Conde hotel at playa Panamá. The hotel is all inclusive, but during our stay they didn’t have the usual all-you-can-eat buffet. Maybe it was just because we visited during low season or perhaps they are searching to provide a more exclusive plan. Customers can order from the menu or ask for the “plat du jour”.

A sunny and gorgeous Sunday, like the one we had today reminds me of how much I like Costa Rica. Will and I went to Barrio Escalante, where the 2nd La Luz Gastronomy Festival took place. We got there early, just in time to try a choripán without having to wait in line.

Summer In The City

I walk along calle Real, Liberia. I see houses that were built years ago, seniors sitting on rocking chairs or benches, just watching people walk by. Their warm smiles bring joy to my heart. Their eyes have witnessed decades of changes, of buildings being built and torn down, of children who outgrew them, of stories about tradition, family and love.
