Blackbird

Blackbird singing in the dead of night

Take these broken wings and learn to fly

All your life

You were only waiting for this moment to arise

You know how certain places make you feel comfortable or safe, maybe your bed or couch, well there are other places that just make you feel free and for me that place was Santa Teresa.

It’s a long ride from Cartago, but it’s the place you should visit when trying to find some peace. Being there, makes you wish you were a backpacker and could spend a couple weeks just reading on the beach, enjoying the sea, talking to people, tasting local food, having deep thoughts or whatever it is that backpackers do! Santa Teresa is the place that makes you dream of leaving everything behind to start a business near the beach, which shall be closed on Mondays or whenever you think there are “good waves” –yes, people actually do that, I saw a sign!

There is no immediate or evident difference between this and other Costa Rican beaches, but everyone does their own thing, whether that’s yoga, surfing, cooking or riding the ATV up and down the main road, and doesn’t mess with anyone else. The whole place seems to say “whatever makes you happy, bro”.

I fall asleep on the beach and when I wake up I hear a group of surfers planning a get-together for tonight that involves someone cooking rice and beans… Oh yes, I definitely like it here…

Take these sunken eyes and learn to see

All your life

You were only waiting for this moment to be free

Blackbird fly, blackbird fly... Into the light of the dark black night
