To Read: Steal Like an Artist
Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon is a revolutionary proposal that encourages artists to accept their work is not 100% original and to be okay with that. Ideas and creative work are built on what came before. Kleon tells artists to look at the world around them and find things “worth stealing”, not in the literal sense, just in the “this inspires me” sense. Once you find things that inspire you, think about how to improve them and make them different. Think about how to make them your own. This could be anything from a book to a photo or a dress.
This concept leaves behind the pressure of having to create something that has never been done before. Instead of creators, artists are collectors that transform and improve existing work to make their own pieces. Through ten bits of advice, Kleon takes readers on a journey where they learn how to “steal” ideas and apply them to their work to achieve creative results.
This book was truly refreshing. When working on school projects, I spend a lot of time and energy trying to come up with an idea that is completely innovative. Honestly, it’s hard, to say the least. More times than not, when I think I have a unique idea, I google it and find out someone has already done something similar.
Kleon suggests artists should keep their eyes open and record anything they like or find inspiring for future reference. He recommends seeking inspiration from multiple sources, from artists that you admire, and the people that those artists admire.
If you are looking for direction or inspiration to begin a creative project, definitely take a look at this book. It’s a fun and quick read that will motivate you to begin working.
